Escaping his marital responsibilities (which were impressed upon him on threat of death), Gentry heads into the North Country, with Mary in hot pursuit. Stunt Pilot – B&W $5.99 Stunt Pilot is a typically lively entry in Monogram’s “Tailspin Tommy” series. Hired to work on an aviation picture, ace pilot Tailspin Tommy (John Trent) immediately runs afoul of obnoxious, grandstanding stunt flyer Martin (George Meeker). Obliged by the script to shoot down Martin in one scene, Tommy discovers to his chagrin that his “prop” gun has been filled with real bullets. Naturally our hero is accused of murder, and just as naturally the guilty party is someone else involved in the film-within-a-film. Most of the aerial dogfight scenes were culled from Howard Hughes’ WW1 epic Hell’s Angels. McGowan directed this inexpensive silent western for W. Ray Johnston’s Syndicate Film Exchange. Minor western lead Bob Custer stars as a detective hired by the ever present Cattlemen’s Association to look into a series of cattle rustlings. The hero accomplishes his goal in the timeworn fashion of infiltrating the gang by going undercover as a bandit. Actor Mack V. Wright, who also played one of the rustlers, wrote the unremarkable screenplay based on an “original” story by Brysis Coleman. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, Rovi Trouble in Texas A rather weak entry in producer Edward F. Finney’s series of Tex Ritter Westerns, Trouble in Texas enjoyed a much longer than usual shelf life courtesy of its beautiful leading lady Rita Hayworth, then known as Rita Cansino. Ritter stars as a rodeo champion searching for the villains who killed his brother. The gang, headed by Barker (Earl Dwire), is summarily poisoning competition to Barker’s own champion, Squint Harmer (Yakima Canutt). With the assistance of Carmen (Hayworth) and comedic sidekick Lucky (Horace Murphy), Ritter not only avoids being poisoned, but goes on to win the rodeo. As a sort of consolation prize, the Barker gang rob the local bank, but choose a rather unfortunate wagon filled with dynamite as the getaway vehicle. In between riding in the (stock-footage) rodeo and chasing down his brother’s killers, Ritter sings his own “Song of the Rodeo” and Al Bryan’s “Down the Colorado Trail,” while Hayworth performs a Mexican dance. When Trouble in Texas was re-released in 1943 by Ambassador Pictures, Rita Hayworth not surprisingly earned star billing ahead of Ritter. ~ Hans J. The Killer Shrews – B&W $5.99 Ken Curtis, former singing cowboy and Gunsmoke’s Festus, joined right-wing radio’s Gordon McLendon in producing this hilariously bad monster movie about a horde of outsized rodents run amok on an isolated island. The creation of mad scientist Baruch Lumet (father of acclaimed director Sidney Lumet), the monster shrews (portrayed by collies in goofy rubber masks!) escape the lab during a hurricane and devour nearly every other animal on the island before seeking human prey — including star James Best and girlfriend Ingrid Goude (1957′s Miss Universe), who are stranded on the island by the same storm. The survivors manage to escape to safety thanks to some goofy contraptions constructed from trash cans. This one is best remembered by bad-film buffs for its tail-wagging canine stars and a multitude of famous names on both sides of the camera. The show started with little recognition and eventually was moved to a new Sunday night time slot. The series then caught fire and became one of television’s top rated shows through most of the mid sixties. Its heroes were the members of the Cartwright clan, owners of The Ponderosa, the largest ranch in Nevada. Patriarchal bible-quoting Ben Cartwright (Lorne Greene) had three sons: serious minded Adam (Pernell Roberts), cheerfully oafish Hoss (Dan Blocker) and impulsive “Little Joe” (Michael Landon). Bonanza was a family show in more ways than one. The program was not a traditional shoot-em-up western, it relied more on the relationships of the four principal actors and the people they came in contact with than it did on violence. The adventures of these men, individually and collectively, made up the continuing saga of Bonanza. For three seasons in a row, 1964-1967, it was the number one show on the air. Lloyd Bridges heads a small band of cavalrymen who desperately try to reach the Little Big Horn in time to warn Custer of a Sioux ambush. One by one, the men are picked off by Indian sharpshooters. The only survivors are Bridges and John Ireland, longtime enemies who may very well knock each other off before ever getting to Custer. Further complications ensue when Myles’ wife Paula (Jacqueline Bisset) discovers the none-too-subtle change in her husband’s behavior, and she is pulled deeper into Ely’s twisted circle. The plot thickens as further soul-swapping, dark family secrets, and demonic possession come into play. A heavy sense of doom pervades this bizarre film, thanks to some offbeat cinematography and eerie music, as well as some truly shocking setpieces courtesy of prolific TV director Paul Wendkos, who helmed the excellent Legend of Lizzie Borden. The prosaic Alda lacks the dangerous edge his character demands, but Bisset’s performance is chillingly effective. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi The House on Skull Mountain This low-budget, Atlanta-lensed blend of horror and “blaxploitation” elements is basically a Ten Little Indians variant with a touch of voodoo thrown in for spice. The plot involves members of a family who are gathering at the decrepit estate of a legendary voodoo priestess for the reading of her will; the potential heirs are systematically murdered by the woman’s butler (Jean Durand), who practices a diabolical form of voodoo himself. The cast is whittled down to two survivors (Victor French and Janee Michelle) before the killer’s plan is undone. A justly forgotten relic of ’70s horror-exploitation, this boring film was directed by television producer Ron Honthaner, who should have stuck with Gunsmoke. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi |

The Thing – Subtitle $12.99 The scene is a distant Arctic research station, where a UFO has crashed. The investigating scientists discover that the circular craft has melted its way into the ice, which has frozen up again. While attempting to recover the ship, Captain Patrick Hendry (Kenneth Tobey) accidentally explodes the vessel, but the pilot — at least, what seems to be the pilot — remains frozen in a block of ice. The body is taken to base headquarters, where it is inadvertently thawed out by an electric blanket. The alien attacks the soldier guarding him and escapes into the snowy wastes. An attack dog rips off the alien’s arm, whereupon Dr. Carrington (Robert Cornthwaite) discerns that “The Thing” (played by future Gunsmoke star James Arness!) is not animal but a member of the carrot family, subsisting on blood. While the misguided Carrington attempts to spawn baby “Things” with the severed arm, the parent creature wreaks murderous havoc all over the base. Female scientist Nikki (Margaret Sheridan) suggests that the best way to destroy a vegetable is to cook it. Over the protests of Carrington, who wants to reason with the “visitor” (a very foolhardy notion, as it turns out), the soldiers devise a devious method for stopping The Thing once and for all. This oversimplification of The Thing does not do full justice to the overall mood and tension of the piece, nor does it convey the lifelike “business as usual” approach taken by the residents of the military base in dealing with something beyond their understanding. The survivors manage to escape to safety thanks to some goofy contraptions constructed from trash cans. This one is best remembered by bad-film buffs for its tail-wagging canine stars and a multitude of famous names on both sides of the camera. Curtis and McLendon’s companion film The Giant Gila Monster is slightly less ridiculous. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi The Giant Gila Monster In The Giant Gila Monster, most of the plot is given over to a group of hot-rod enthusiasts, headed by nice-guy Chace Winstead (Don Sullivan), who sometimes breaks into song. Before long, the titular gila monster, which is just that — a real gila monster — is lumbering about on miniaturized sets terrorizing the community, killing at random, knocking over trains and barns, and in general making a nuisance of itself. When the monster threatens to devour Chace’s kid sister, he attempts to dispatch the beast with a hot rod full of nitroglycerin. The story centers on the dysfunctional Haloran family, who live in a state of perpetual sorrow in a spooky Irish castle. Still mourning the death of her young daughter Kathleen — who drowned in the lake seven years ago — Lady Haloran (Ethne Dunn) tortures herself regularly by visiting the girl’s grave (when she’s not shrieking and collapsing in anguish every five minutes). When daughter-in-law Louise Haloran (Luana Anders) loses her husband to a heart attack, she manages to conceal the body for fear of being cut out of Lady Haloran’s will. To further complicate matters, a mysterious interloper begins prowling the grounds with an axe to grind… a very big axe. This enjoyable, quirky psycho-thriller is enlivened by Coppola’s inventive camera setups, atmospheric locations and Patrick Magee’s over-the-top performance as the leering family doctor. (1965) Combat!: Rear Echelon Commandos With King Company suffering heavy losses, Saunders (Vic Morrow) and Hanley (Rick Jason) are happy to see the arrival of three replacements: Gainsborough (Stephen Coit), Temple (John Considine) and Crown (John Considine). They are less happy to learn that none of the three men has ever seen combat, nor that the trio’s civilian jobs hardly prepared them for Army life (one of the replacements is a former ballet dancer). Even so, Saunders must take this raw material along on an extremely dangerous reconnaissance mission. This episode is based on a story by Richard Tregaskis, the author of the classic WW2 memoir Guadalcanal Diary. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Combat!: The Celebrity Tab Hunter guest stars as Del Packer, a famous baseball pitcher who has joined King Company as a draftee. Sgt. Saunders (Vic Morrow) is the only member of the platoon who isn’t starstruck by the celebrity in their midst, grimly demanding that Packer be treated just like any other GI. But this proves difficult when the ballplayer reveals himself to be a profoundly–and even dangerously–troubled man. A particularly violent climax caps this terse character study, in which familiar supporting actors Bernard Fox and Eric Braeden (then known as Hans Gudegast appear unbilled. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Combat!: The First Day Once again, Saunders (Vic Morrow) and his men are forced wet-nurse some green replacments. This time, the rookies are four teenagers, who are immediately plunged into action when the squad goes on a dangerous assignment. Who among the four will survive–and more importantly, will their lack of experience prove fatal to Saunders and the others? Among the new recruits are Kevin Coughlin, who used to be known as “Moochie” when he was under contract to Walt Disney, and Buck Taylor, soon to join the cast of Gunsmoke as erstwhile deputy Newly O’Brien. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Combat!: S.I.W. John Cassavetes guest stars as Pvt. Kalb, newest member of King Company. Saunders (Vic Morrow) is none too happy with the arrival of Kalb, who has a reputation for goldbricking and cowardice–and who may or may not have been responsible for the decimation of the two previous squads to which he’d been assigned. Alamo The $9.76 Rated: NRSynopsis: A sprawling, long-winded, and unabashedly patriotic spectacle, John Wayne’s The Alamo provides the definitive motion-picture representation of the 13-day siege that enabled Texas to secure its independence from Mexico. This 1960 epic, a deeply personal project that obsessed Wayne for years and sapped his personal fortune, plays fast-and-loose with historical reality; nonetheless, it admirably conveys the indomitable spirit of the martyred “Texicans” whose heroic defense of an old mission in San Antonio bought precious time for the burgeoning rebel army that ultimately defeated Mexican general Santa Anna. Wayne, who produced and directed the picture (reportedly with some assistance from his old friend and mentor, John Ford), plays Davy Crockett to Richard Widmark’s Jim Bowie and Laurence Harvey’s William Travis. The battle scenes are lavishly mounted and impeccably staged, but there’s more to The Alamo than gunsmoke and cannon fire: James Edward Grant’s script is peppered with stirring odes to democracy, and Dimitri Tiomkin complements Wayne’s images with one of his most evocative musical scores. MGM’s latest DVD release presents the film in its traditional release version of 161 minutes; a longer cut — the film’s “roadshow” version — appeared on laserdisc some years ago. John Wayne’s directorial debut The Alamo is set in 1836: Wayne plays Col. Davy Crockett, who, together with Colonels Jim Bowie (Richard Widmark) and William Travis (Laurence Harvey) and 184 hardy Americans and Texicans, defends the Alamo mission against the troops of Mexican general Santa Ana. There’s a lot of macho byplay before the actual attack, including the famous “letter” scene in which Wayne craftily rouses the patriotic ire of his subordinates. Also appearing are Richard Boone as Sam Houston, and Chill Wills (whose somewhat tasteless Oscar campaign has since become legendary in the annals of shameless self-promotion) as Beekeeper. Wayne’s production crew was compelled to reconstruct the Alamo in Bracketville, Texas, about a hundred miles from the actual site. Dimitri Tiomkin’s score, including “The Green Leaves of Summer,” received generous airplay on the Top-40 radio outlets of America. Rumors persist that Wayne’s old pal John Ford directed most of The Alamo; cut to 161 minutes for its general release, the film was restored to its original, 192-minute length in 1992.
