Jamie Carcaterra is your typical high school senior – from SATs to extracurriculars, she’s completely overscheduled. Unlike most of her friends, she’s also overweight. But don’t you dare feel sorry for her. Jamie has friends, a boyfriend, a starring role in the school play, and a column in the school newspaper. Jamie knows what it’s like to be a fat girl in a thin world, and this year she’s going to set the record straight. She’s got her whole senior year planned and it’s going to be good. But then, even the best-laid plans can fall apart. . . .

The Darker Mask Hearos From The Shadows

The Darker Mask Hearos From The Shadows

$2.99

Expanding on the concept behind Byron Preiss’s Weird Heroes from the 1970s, George R. R. Martin’s Wild Card series, and Michael Chabon’s McSweeney’s Mammoth Treasury of Thrilling Tales, The Darker Mask is a collection of original prose stories recalling the derring-do of the beings we call Superheroes and the worlds they fight to save. But unique to The Darker Mask stories is that these plots and characters color a literary universe outside of what has been predominantly white, idiosyncratic, and male in previous homages to pulp. This is the stuff of urban legends, new mythos, and extraordinary folks who might live in a soon-to-be-gentrified ghetto, the dreary rust-belt of the city, or in another dimension. The Darker Mask offers an eclectic mix of popular fiction writers exploring worlds gritty, visceral, and fantastic. Including stories by: Walter Mosley, L. A. Banks, Naomi Hirahara, Lorenzo Carcaterra, Tananarive Due and Stephen Barnes, Mike Gonzales, Gar Anthony Haywood, Ann Nocenti, Jerry Rodriguez, Reed Farrell Coleman, Doselle Young, Mat Johnson, Peter Spiegelman, Alexandra Sokoloff, Christopher Chambers, Gary Phillips, Victor LaValle, and Wayne Wilson.

Barry Levinson directed this crime drama based on a controversial bestseller. Jason Patrick stars as Lorenzo, a New York reporter more commonly called “Shakes,” a nickname courtesy of his three childhood pals from Hell’s Kitchen — Michael (Brad Pitt), John (Ron Eldard), and Tommy (Billy Crudup). As kids, all four were sent to reform school after accidentally killing someone during a cruel prank. There, the boys were raped and beaten by several guards, including Sean Nokes (Kevin Bacon), a fact that they’ve kept secret into adulthood. Michael is now a rising star in the district attorney’s office, while John and Tommy are founders of the Irish gang the Westies. When Nokes walks into John and Tommy’s hangout, they kill him in cold blood and go on trial, defended by a drug-addicted lawyer (Dustin Hoffman). Michael and Shakes conspire with childhood friend Carol (Minnie Driver) and local priest Father Bobby (Robert DeNiro) to free their friends and get even with the surviving guards. Based on a true story chronicled by Lorenzo Carcaterra in his novel of the same name, Sleepers stirred controversy when the veracity of the book was challenged by reporters who could find no documentation of the events described. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Based on detailed research from around the world, the author examines early societies, slavery, the guilds, the creation of trade secrets and the influence of religion on work (such as the humanist ideals of the great Quaker industrialists). Donkin also investigates the ideas of the theorists, such as F. W. Taylor, Max Weber, Elton Mayo, Mary Parker Follett, and W. Edwards Demming, and the impact they have had on our lives. And, controversially, the author challenges the work ethic on behalf of all those whose lives have increasingly become subsumed by the demands of employers, asking the question: Why do we do it?

By day, Link Wyler was a character actor who often appeared on TV Westerns, most notably Gunsmoke. By night, Wyler was a passionate blues fan, and in 1971, when he discovered that Muddy Waters, Big Joe Turner, Big Mama Thornton, and George “Harmonica” Smith would be making their way up the West Coast as part of a package tour, he persuaded several cameramen from Gunsmoke to pack up their camera equipment and sound gear and follow the tour for the weekend, catching up with them at a college gig in Oregon. Gunsmoke Blues is the result, which features the long-lost footage from this weekend adventure, capturing these master blues artists in fine and funky form. Selections include “Got My Mojo Working,” “Long Distance Call,” and “Mannish Boy” (Muddy Waters), “Shake, Rattle and Roll” (Big Joe Turner), “Ball and Chain” (Big Mama Thornton), and “Leaving Chicago” (George “Harmonica” Smith). ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

James Arness returns to the role of US marshal Matt Dillon after a twelve-year absence in the made-for-TV Gunsmoke: Return to Dodge. Amanda Blake is also back as Miss Kitty, “hostess” of Dodge City’s Long Branch saloon. The plot involves Dillon’s reunion with Kitty in a Dodge City festooned with bad guys, chief among them a plugugly named Mannon (Steve Forrest), who has sworn to kill Matt. For those who weren’t around for the original Gunsmoke TV series (which ran from 1955 through 1975), this film provides us with several clips from the old series, presented as flashbacks. Vincent McEveety, director of many an old Gunsmoke installment, calls the shots on this reunion special. Filmed not in the wilds of Kansas but in Alberta, Canada, Gunsmoke: Return to Dodge premiered on September 26, 1987. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

When business slows down, Hooker and company can always count on a little larceny to fill the coffers. Among the stars of Doc Hooker’s Bunch is veteran western sidekick Dub Taylor, and Dub’s son Buck Taylor, the latter best known for his recurring role as Newly O’Brien on TV’s Gunsmoke. This is big city Austin with a web of police corruption, ol’ time vigilantes and double-dealing, triple-crossing scoundrels. Colt 45/Fort Worth/Tall Man Riding (DVD) (3FE) (Multi-Title)

$9.95

Lanky icon Randolph Scott saddles up for three Westerns making their home video debut. He buckles up a brace of six-shooter “hand cannons” in Colt .45 (Side A) to chase a desperado who uses similar weapons to terrorize locals. No one messes with Texas – not in Fort Worth (Side B). Gunsmoke and glory combine as newspaperman Scott backs up his fiery editorials with a blaze of bullets when lawlessness threatens. Finally, Scott is a Tall Man Riding (Side B) – and brawling and shooting – as he rights an injustice involving a gambler’s attempted land grab. The well-worn Stetson Scott wears is his “lucky” hat, and Tall Man Riding marked the 27th time Scott wore it in a movie. We tip our hats to one of the genre’s all-time greats!

Will they be able to stand firm, especially when word leaks out and a panicked and furious population starts to hunt them down? William Asher (I Love Lucy) directed this seldom-seen sleeper, adapted by John Mantley (Gunsmoke) from his own novel; the cast also includes Valerie French, George Voskovec, Paul Birch, Mel Welles and legendary voice actor Paul Frees in a rare onscreen appearance as a newscaster. Gun the Man Down -

Gun the Man Down -

Two years into Gunsmoke, James Arness took time out of his busy schedule to star in the medium-budget western Arizona Mission. Trading in his white hat for a black one, Arness plays a bandit. He and partners Robert J. Wilke and Don Megowan pull off a robbery; the partners then vamoose with the loot, leaving Big Jim empty-handed and seriously wounded. He is also betrayed by his lady friend Angie Dickinson. When Arness finally catches up with his former chums, he decides to “psych” them out rather than fill them full of lead right off the bat. Written by future director Burt Kennedy, who’d penned many a “Mexican standoff” picture for Randolph Scott and Budd Boetticher, Arizona Mission represented the first big-screen directorial effort for Andrew McLaglen. The film was originally released as Gun the Man Down. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This formula Esther Williams musical casts the star as Midwestern carnival swimmer Christine Duncan, in love with bandleader Dick Layn (Van Johnson). Attempting to smooth the course of romance for her friend Ellen Hallet (Paula Raymond), Christine makes a play for Ellen’s wealthy boss Douglas J. Morrissen, Jr. (John Lund). Ellen wants to protect Douglas from fortune hunters, so Christine pretends to be a fortune hunter, so that he’ll appreciate anew how much Ellen cares for him. Confused? So is Dick, who can’t fathom Christine’s bizarre behavior. If for nothing else, Duchess of Idaho is memorable as the “comeback” picture for dancing star Eleanor Powell, who has just as little to do as her fellow guest stars Lena Horne and (unbilled) Red Skelton. Watch for Amanda Gunsmoke Blake and Dick Sergeant Preston Simmons in supporting roles. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A machine able to extract gold from the ocean floor is desired by both Axis powers and the FBI in this 13 chapter Universal serial directed by the team of Ray Taylor and Lewis D. Collins. Milburn Stone — later “Doc Adams” on television’s Gunsmoke — starred as G-Man Tom Brant, with blond Jan Wiley, as a girl reporter, and Dennis Moore, as an intrepid detective, all three stymied by the mysterious “Master Key,” a villain who always seem one step ahead. Five screenwriters worked on the script. Future B-Western star Al “Lash” LaRue made his screen debut in this serial, billed as Alfred LaRue and playing one of the villain’s henchmen. ~ Hans J. Many Rivers to Cross -

Many Rivers to Cross -

$9.99

Packaged and sold as an outdoor actioner, Many Rivers to Cross is as much a comedy as anything else. Robert Taylor stars as 18th century trapper Bushrod Gentry, who is himself entrapped into marriage by the spunky Mary Stuart Cherne (Eleanor Parker). Escaping his marital responsibilities (which were impressed upon him on threat of death), Gentry heads into the North Country, with Mary in hot pursuit. Hero and heroine spend the rest of the picture taking turns rescuing each other from hostile Indians. Some of the humor is predicated upon the wholesale slaughter of the “redskins”, and as such is a bit hard to take when seen today. Supporting Taylor and Parker are Victor McLaglen as the heroine’s burly father, and TV-stars-to be James Arness (Gunsmoke) and Russell Johnson and Alan Hale Jr. (Gilligan’s Island). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Stunt Pilot – B&W

$5.99

Stunt Pilot is a typically lively entry in Monogram’s “Tailspin Tommy” series. Hired to work on an aviation picture, ace pilot Tailspin Tommy (John Trent) immediately runs afoul of obnoxious, grandstanding stunt flyer Martin (George Meeker). Obliged by the script to shoot down Martin in one scene, Tommy discovers to his chagrin that his “prop” gun has been filled with real bullets. Naturally our hero is accused of murder, and just as naturally the guilty party is someone else involved in the film-within-a-film. Most of the aerial dogfight scenes were culled from Howard Hughes’ WW1 epic Hell’s Angels. Returning from previous “Tailspin Tommy” adventures are Marjorie Reynolds as the hero’s sweetheart Betty Lou and Milburn Stone (Gunsmoke’s Doc) as his best pal Skeeter. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Taking to the pavement in a horrific frenzy of rape, robbery, and revenge, Vitali seals his own grim fate when, in brutalizing a beautiful young woman, he catches the attention of a determined cop (Richard Harrison) bent on bringing the murderous madman to justice. As his relentless slide into darkness speeds to a furious race against death, Vitali seems determined to avoid going back into his cage even if it means going down in a hail of bullets and gunsmoke. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Classic Westerns: Tex Ritter – B&W

$8.99

Includes:Arizona Days (1928) Trouble in Texas (1937) Oklahoma Raiders (1944) Marshal of Gunsmoke (1944) Arizona Days Prolific poverty-row producer-director-actor J.P. McGowan directed this inexpensive silent western for W. Ray Johnston’s Syndicate Film Exchange. Minor western lead Bob Custer stars as a detective hired by the ever present Cattlemen’s Association to look into a series of cattle rustlings. The hero accomplishes his goal in the timeworn fashion of infiltrating the gang by going undercover as a bandit. Actor Mack V. Wright, who also played one of the rustlers, wrote the unremarkable screenplay based on an “original” story by Brysis Coleman. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, Rovi Trouble in Texas A rather weak entry in producer Edward F. Finney’s series of Tex Ritter Westerns, Trouble in Texas enjoyed a much longer than usual shelf life courtesy of its beautiful leading lady Rita Hayworth, then known as Rita Cansino. Ritter stars as a rodeo champion searching for the villains who killed his brother. The gang, headed by Barker (Earl Dwire), is summarily poisoning competition to Barker’s own champion, Squint Harmer (Yakima Canutt). With the assistance of Carmen (Hayworth) and comedic sidekick Lucky (Horace Murphy), Ritter not only avoids being poisoned, but goes on to win the rodeo. As a sort of consolation prize, the Barker gang rob the local bank, but choose a rather unfortunate wagon filled with dynamite as the getaway vehicle. In between riding in the (stock-footage) rodeo and chasing down his brother’s killers, Ritter sings his own “Song of the Rodeo” and Al Bryan’s “Down the Colorado Trail,” while Hayworth performs a Mexican dance. When Trouble in Texas was re-released in 1943 by Ambassador Pictures, Rita Hayworth not surprisingly earned star billing ahead of Ritter. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, Rovi Oklahoma Raiders In this western, two cowboys go to buy fresh horses for the cavalry and end up taking on two badguys and a female vigilante. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi Marshal of Gunsmoke U.S. marshal Ritter arrives in town to round up bandits who are attempting to fix the local elections. ~ Rovi

Rated: NRSynopsis: She can ski too! Slipping a fur-lined parka over her trademark bathing suit, Hollywood’s favorite mermaid hits the snow-covered slopes of Idaho’s famous Sun Valley in this charming, song-filled romantic comedy. But never fear, aqua lovers, for the film also features two Esther Williams water ballets “of the extra gorgeous variety” (Los Angeles Times). Cast as a successful swimming star, Miss Williams has never looked lovelier as she travels to Sun Valley to help her lovesick roommate (Paula Raymond) snare her rich but elusive boss (John Lund). But when both Lund and bandleader Van Johnson fall head over heels for Esther, she finds herself having to tread water in a sea of light romance. With its breathtaking scenery captured in rich Technicolor, this lavish production features a top-drawer cast that includes Mel Tormé, Clinton Sundberg and Amanda Blake (Gunsmoke’s Miss Kitty) – plus special appearances by Lena Horne, Eleanor Powell and Red Skelton.

Bonanza

Bonanza

$11.69

Rated: NASynopsis: Created by producer David Dortort, the first ever color series, Bonanza, premiered on Saturday, September 12, 1959. The show started with little recognition and eventually was moved to a new Sunday night time slot. The series then caught fire and became one of television’s top rated shows through most of the mid sixties. Its heroes were the members of the Cartwright clan, owners of The Ponderosa, the largest ranch in Nevada. Patriarchal bible-quoting Ben Cartwright (Lorne Greene) had three sons: serious minded Adam (Pernell Roberts), cheerfully oafish Hoss (Dan Blocker) and impulsive “Little Joe” (Michael Landon). Bonanza was a family show in more ways than one. The program was not a traditional shoot-em-up western, it relied more on the relationships of the four principal actors and the people they came in contact with than it did on violence. The adventures of these men, individually and collectively, made up the continuing saga of Bonanza. For three seasons in a row, 1964-1967, it was the number one show on the air. After fourteen and a half years and 431 episodes, Bonanza finished second only to Gunsmoke as the longest running and most successful western in the history of television.

$12.99

Includes:Rimfire (1949) Little Big Horn (1951) Rimfire Bargain-budget Screen Guild Productions was in the process of metamorphosing into Lippert Studios when Rimfire was filmed in 1949. This “government vs. gold thieves” affair has all of the virtues of the eager-to-please Lippert production team and none of the shortcomings of the pinchpenny Screen Guild operation. James Millican heads the cast as a special agent tracking down a lost shipment of Army gold. This leads him to a superstition-laden village where the townsfolk are convinced that the ghost of a hanged gambler is wreaking all sorts of havoc. It doesn’t take Millican long to get to the bottom of the occult activity-and to locate the gold robbers in the process. With bigger star names, Rimfire might have secured better bookings; still, it did respectable business under the circumstances. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Little Big Horn Ninety per cent of Little Big Horn takes place before Custer’s Last Stand; thus, the emphasis is on character and suspense rather than spectacle (just as well, since spectacle was well out of the range of parsimonious Lippert Studios). Lloyd Bridges heads a small band of cavalrymen who desperately try to reach the Little Big Horn in time to warn Custer of a Sioux ambush. One by one, the men are picked off by Indian sharpshooters. The only survivors are Bridges and John Ireland, longtime enemies who may very well knock each other off before ever getting to Custer. Little Big Horn was the first directorial assignment for western-writer Charles Marquis Warren. It was hardly the last: Warren would later be one of the most prolific contributors to the Gunsmoke TV series of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

House on Skull Mountain / The Mephisto Waltz [2 Discs] -

$12.99

Includes:The Mephisto Waltz (1971), MPAA Rating: R The House on Skull Mountain (1974), MPAA Rating: PG The Mephisto Waltz Adapted from a Fred Mustard Stewart novel, this offbeat occult thriller stars Alan Alda (just prior to his eleven-year stint on M*A*S*H) as journalist and burgeoning musician Myles Clarkson, whose long-sought interview with ailing concert pianist (and closet Satanist) Duncan Ely (Curt Jurgens) leads to a mysterious ritual in which Ely’s soul is transferred into Clarkson’s body at the moment of the elder man’s death. Further complications ensue when Myles’ wife Paula (Jacqueline Bisset) discovers the none-too-subtle change in her husband’s behavior, and she is pulled deeper into Ely’s twisted circle. The plot thickens as further soul-swapping, dark family secrets, and demonic possession come into play. A heavy sense of doom pervades this bizarre film, thanks to some offbeat cinematography and eerie music, as well as some truly shocking setpieces courtesy of prolific TV director Paul Wendkos, who helmed the excellent Legend of Lizzie Borden. The prosaic Alda lacks the dangerous edge his character demands, but Bisset’s performance is chillingly effective. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi The House on Skull Mountain This low-budget, Atlanta-lensed blend of horror and “blaxploitation” elements is basically a Ten Little Indians variant with a touch of voodoo thrown in for spice. The plot involves members of a family who are gathering at the decrepit estate of a legendary voodoo priestess for the reading of her will; the potential heirs are systematically murdered by the woman’s butler (Jean Durand), who practices a diabolical form of voodoo himself. The cast is whittled down to two survivors (Victor French and Janee Michelle) before the killer’s plan is undone. A justly forgotten relic of ’70s horror-exploitation, this boring film was directed by television producer Ron Honthaner, who should have stuck with Gunsmoke. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

The scene is a distant Arctic research station, where a UFO has crashed. The investigating scientists discover that the circular craft has melted its way into the ice, which has frozen up again. While attempting to recover the ship, Captain Patrick Hendry (Kenneth Tobey) accidentally explodes the vessel, but the pilot — at least, what seems to be the pilot — remains frozen in a block of ice. The body is taken to base headquarters, where it is inadvertently thawed out by an electric blanket. The alien attacks the soldier guarding him and escapes into the snowy wastes. An attack dog rips off the alien’s arm, whereupon Dr. Carrington (Robert Cornthwaite) discerns that “The Thing” (played by future Gunsmoke star James Arness!) is not animal but a member of the carrot family, subsisting on blood. While the misguided Carrington attempts to spawn baby “Things” with the severed arm, the parent creature wreaks murderous havoc all over the base. Female scientist Nikki (Margaret Sheridan) suggests that the best way to destroy a vegetable is to cook it. Over the protests of Carrington, who wants to reason with the “visitor” (a very foolhardy notion, as it turns out), the soldiers devise a devious method for stopping The Thing once and for all. This oversimplification of The Thing does not do full justice to the overall mood and tension of the piece, nor does it convey the lifelike “business as usual” approach taken by the residents of the military base in dealing with something beyond their understanding. A superior blend of science fiction, horror, naturalistic dialogue, and flesh-and-blood characterizations, The Thing is a model of its kind. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The story centers on the dysfunctional Haloran family, who live in a state of perpetual sorrow in a spooky Irish castle. Still mourning the death of her young daughter Kathleen — who drowned in the lake seven years ago — Lady Haloran (Ethne Dunn) tortures herself regularly by visiting the girl’s grave (when she’s not shrieking and collapsing in anguish every five minutes). When daughter-in-law Louise Haloran (Luana Anders) loses her husband to a heart attack, she manages to conceal the body for fear of being cut out of Lady Haloran’s will. To further complicate matters, a mysterious interloper begins prowling the grounds with an axe to grind… a very big axe. This enjoyable, quirky psycho-thriller is enlivened by Coppola’s inventive camera setups, atmospheric locations and Patrick Magee’s over-the-top performance as the leering family doctor. Despite some ragged editing (probably not Coppola’s doing), this has relatively high production values for a spare-change Corman project. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

Alamo The

Alamo The

$9.76

Rated: NRSynopsis: A sprawling, long-winded, and unabashedly patriotic spectacle, John Wayne’s The Alamo provides the definitive motion-picture representation of the 13-day siege that enabled Texas to secure its independence from Mexico. This 1960 epic, a deeply personal project that obsessed Wayne for years and sapped his personal fortune, plays fast-and-loose with historical reality; nonetheless, it admirably conveys the indomitable spirit of the martyred “Texicans” whose heroic defense of an old mission in San Antonio bought precious time for the burgeoning rebel army that ultimately defeated Mexican general Santa Anna. Wayne, who produced and directed the picture (reportedly with some assistance from his old friend and mentor, John Ford), plays Davy Crockett to Richard Widmark’s Jim Bowie and Laurence Harvey’s William Travis. The battle scenes are lavishly mounted and impeccably staged, but there’s more to The Alamo than gunsmoke and cannon fire: James Edward Grant’s script is peppered with stirring odes to democracy, and Dimitri Tiomkin complements Wayne’s images with one of his most evocative musical scores. MGM’s latest DVD release presents the film in its traditional release version of 161 minutes; a longer cut — the film’s “roadshow” version — appeared on laserdisc some years ago. John Wayne’s directorial debut The Alamo is set in 1836: Wayne plays Col. Davy Crockett, who, together with Colonels Jim Bowie (Richard Widmark) and William Travis (Laurence Harvey) and 184 hardy Americans and Texicans, defends the Alamo mission against the troops of Mexican general Santa Ana. There’s a lot of macho byplay before the actual attack, including the famous “letter” scene in which Wayne craftily rouses the patriotic ire of his subordinates. Also appearing are Richard Boone as Sam Houston, and Chill Wills (whose somewhat tasteless Oscar campaign has since become legendary in the annals of shameless self-promotion) as Beekeeper. Wayne’s production crew was compelled to reconstruct the Alamo in Bracketville, Texas, about a hundred miles from the actual site. Dimitri Tiomkin’s score, including “The Green Leaves of Summer,” received generous airplay on the Top-40 radio outlets of America. Rumors persist that Wayne’s old pal John Ford directed most of The Alamo; cut to 161 minutes for its general release, the film was restored to its original, 192-minute length in 1992.
